Pakistan Launch of Red Birds by Mohammed Hanif | Karachi Library

Sunday 2nd December 17:00 19:30

Join us at the exclusive Pakistan launch of Mohammed Hanif's highly acclaimed new novel!

About the event

The British Council is thrilled to invite you to the Pakistan launch of Red Birds, Mohammed Hanif’s most recent and highly acclaimed novel. Join us for an exclusive evening with the author where he will be in conversation with journalist and author, Sanam Maher, and will later read an excerpt from the novel and sign copies for the audience.

Marked with Hanif’s trademark satire and wit, alternating between slapstick and poignant, this novel is a resounding critique of both the production and ravages of modern war. Bitingly funny and clever, Red Birds is like nothing you’ve read before.

Copies of the book will be available for sale at the event.

About the author:

Mohammed Hanif is one of Pakistan’s most important literary voices – uncompromising, nuanced and deeply grounded. A career journalist who switched to fiction, Red Birds is his third novel. His first novel ‘A Case of Exploding Mangoes’ was long-listed for the Man Booker prize, shortlisted for the Guardian First Book Award, and won the Commonwealth First Book and the Shakti Bhatt First Book Prizes. His second novel ‘Our Lady of Alice Bhatti’ was shortlisted for the Wellcome Trust Book Prize and the DSC Prize for South Asian Literature. His work has been published in The Daily Telegraph, The New Yorker and The Washington Post, and he writes a monthly opinion piece for The New York Times. He has also been awarded the Sitara-e-Imtiaz by the Government of Pakistan.

About the moderator:

Sanam Maher is a journalist based in Karachi, Pakistan. For more than a decade, she has covered stories on Pakistan’s art and culture, business, politics, religious minorities and women. As a freelance journalist since 2015, her work has appeared in Al Jazeera, BuzzFeed, The Caravan, Roads & Kingdoms, and The New York Times’ Women in the World, amongst others.
