About the event
Imagine living in a world where everyone is the same, where you've never experienced love or fear or pain or hatred. Your life has already been planned out for you and you have no choice in how to live it. Could you live this way?
The book we're discussing this month is Lois Lowry's The Giver - a classic science fiction story of a world without individuality, memory or emotion. Jonas inhabits this world of 'sameness'. Poverty, war and disorder of any kind were eradicated from his community long ago. When Jonas turns twelve, he is selected to be the society's next Receiver of Memories - a position given out only once every few generations. He discovers secrets about the society's past and the terrible choices that were made. Now that he knows the truth, there is no turning back.
If you enjoyed The Hunger Games and Divergent series, then you'll love The Giver. So get reading (or watch the movie!) and join us at the library to discuss this page-turner.
Members can borrow the book from the library; however, our copies are limited and available on a first come first serve basis.
