Julie Murphy’s bestselling book about self-acceptance and upending stereotypes has inspired a Netflix adaptation, and will be the inspiration you didn’t know you needed.
Willowdean Dickson (‘Dumplin’ to her mother) has always been comfortable in her own skin. She knows she’s overweight and she’s ok with it. Things change however, when she starts to work at a local fast food joint. Her best friend begins to act distant and an unbelievably attractive guy seems to suddenly be very interested in her.
As her self-esteem takes several hits, she decides to push back by entering her town’s local teen beauty pageant. Her rebellion inspires several more misfits to follow suit. Together they embark on a mission to shock their small town and prove to the world that they deserve to feel beautiful just as much as anyone else.
Whether you’ve read the book or seen the film, join us and other like-minded teens as we discuss this heart-warming book, with snacks of course.
