Violet and Finch first meet on the ledge of the bell tower at their high-school just as the former is about to end her life. So begins an unlikely friendship that is the crux of Jennifer Niven’s nuanced and sensitive take on grief, love and mental health.
Violet is popular, with lots of friends and a happening social life. That is, until her sister dies in a car crash. Finch has been struggling with depression, an abusive parent and often thinks about suicide. Their chance encounter results in them pairing up for a class project and their subsequent ‘wandering’ helps them to forge a bond that may be the only reason either decides to stay alive.
