About the event
This month’s pick is the Booker shortlisted novel, 10 minutes and 38 Seconds in This Strange World by award-winning British-Turkish author, Elif Shafak.
Tequila Leila has been brutally murdered and left in a dumpster on the outskirts of the city of Istanbul. But in the 10 minutes and 38 seconds after her heart stops beating, her brain is still active with memories of her bittersweet life. The last vestiges of Leila’s fading consciousness throw up sights, scents and sounds from her past - some tender, some painful, all of them leading inexorably to a brutal present - the memories they bring present an extraordinary tale of a broken but profoundly courageous woman.
