Irvine Welsh is a Scottish novelist best known for ‘Trainspotting’. The book was was adapted into a film starring a young Ewan McGregor, with the movie quickly becoming a cult hit.

Trainspotting made a huge splash thanks to how unapologetically it portrayed life for a group of disenfranchised young men living in Scotland. It tackles issues like poverty and drug use with humour and insight. The story has a strong sense of place thanks to the use of dialect, giving it a sense of gritty reality.

You have probably heard those iconic opening lines, even if you didn’t realise what they were from:

"Choose a life. Choose a job. Choose a career. Choose a family. Choose a big television..."

Irvine Welsh has published a whopping eleven novels to date, along with four collections of short stories. His novel, Filth was also adapted for film in 2013, starring the actor James McAvoy.
